NFPA 901 provides the latest guidelines to help fire departments and other fire protection organizations effectively share data with other agencies. It provides a common language and definitions that define and describe elements and classifications used by many fire departments in the United States and other countries to describe fire damage potential and experience during incidents. Please note: This Standard is in a custom cycle due to the Emergency Response and Responder Safety Document Consolidation Plan (consolidation plan) as approved by the NFPA Standards Council. For revision cycle information, see the Next Edition tab. Note: The First Draft Report scheduled to post on October 25, 2024, will be delayed due to a request by the Technical Committee to move to a future revision cycle (ERRS Annual 2027), including request to re-open for Public Input. Revised schedule dates will be posted after the Council considers the committee’s request at its meeting in December 2024.

About This Product

NFPA 901 guidelines enable fire departments and other fire protection organizations to more effectively report data.

NFPA 901, Standard Classifications for Fire and Emergency Services Incident Reporting, is aligned with the US Fire Administration (USFA) and the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) to help ensure the consistency of the requirements. Used by software developers and end users, NFPA 901 establishes a common language and definitions of elements and classifications used by fire departments throughout the United States and the world.

NFPA 901 addresses the following:

  • Pre-incident environments, including the fire defense features of a structure
  • Fire and other emergency incidents
  • Post-incident damage assessments
  • Fire service data

The 2021 edition of NFPA 901 has been almost entirely reworked. Tables have been consolidated, eliminated, or moved to the annexes to make the document more user-friendly. In addition, new chapters on fire investigation have been added to align NFPA 901 with NFPA 921, Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations. Special attention has also been paid to the most current and up-to-date forms of reporting.

The standard also includes a classification system for data captured by automated databases, though it does not provide guidelines for reporting systems or related forms. (Print, 170 pp., 2021)
