NFPA 1914: Standard for Testing Fire Department Aerial Devices* provides the requirements and procedures for conducting a test of the aerial device on an apparatus, including aerial ladders, elevating platforms, and water towers.
Two levels of inspection and testing are defined in this standard:
- The first level consists of visual inspections, operational tests, and load tests that should be conducted — at least annually — after major repairs or overhaul — following the use of the aerial device when the aerial device could have been subjected to unusual operating conditions of stress or load — when there is reason to believe that usage has exceeded the manufacturer’s recommended aerial device operating procedures.
- The second level adds nondestructive testing (NDT) and is required to be done at least every 5 years and whenever the visual inspection or load testing indicates a potential problem or there is a desire to further confirm continued operational safety.
Major changes to the 2002 edition of NFPA 1914 include:
- Clarified qualifications of inspection and testing personnel
- Added inspection requirements for some components that were not covered previously
- Editorially revised wording to clarify the intent of requirements
