This Standard outlines an occupational medical program that will reduce risks and provide for the health, safety, and effectiveness of fire fighters operating to protect civilian life and property. Please note: As part of the Emergency Response and Responder Safety Document Consolidation Plan (consolidation plan) as approved by the NFPA Standards Council, this Standard has been combined into new consolidated Standard NFPA 1580. The latest edition of NFPA 1582, Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments, includes several significant changes:
Expanded and revised material on psychiatric, psychological, and behavioral health was added; essential job tasks were updated in Sections 5.1 and 9.1.
In Chapters 6 and 9, the alignment of medical evaluation criteria was improved.
Updated guidance on cancer screening was added.
The annex on “Protocols for Evaluation of Fitness of Members” was replaced with a reference to the Fire Service Joint Labor Management Wellness-Fitness Initiative (WFI) in Chapter 8.
The annex on “Maternal and Child Health Considerations” was updated in accordance with the latest research and information.
