This standard safeguards emergency services personnel on the job by establishing requirements for flame-resistant station uniform clothing that won’t cause or exacerbate burn injury. Please note: As part of the Emergency Response and Responder Safety Document Consolidation Plan (consolidation plan) as approved by the NFPA Standards Council, this Standard has been combined into new consolidated Standard NFPA 1970. As a result of this action, the “current edition” of NFPA 1975 shown on this page is the last published edition of the standard’s content as a stand-alone standard. For further information and text of the current consolidated Standard, go to NFPA 1970.

Promote on-the-job safety for fire and emergency services personnel with work apparel that complies with NFPA 1975.
Firefighters and emergency services personnel face dangerous occupational hazards, and they need work apparel that won’t cause or exacerbate burn injury. NFPA 1975, Standard on Emergency Services Work Apparel, sets the bar for protective garments specifically designed to withstand the effects of heat.
Recently made a standard, NFPA 1975 is revised with language that should be adopted nationwide and referenced by jurisdictions, AHJs, and uniform manufacturers.
NFPA 1975 specifies the latest requirements for the design, performance, testing, and certification of flame-resistant or thermally stable station apparel capable of withstanding the effects of heat and protecting against burn injury. Emergency services station apparel includes non-primary protective garments configured as long- or short-sleeve shirts (regular, polo, T-shirt, sweatshirt), station pants, and shorts. This category does not include underwear, socks, dress uniforms, or outerwear.
The 2019 edition of NFPA 1975 is aligned with other PPE standards.
- Letter heights are adjusted to bring them in line with the rest of the personal protective equipment (PPE) project.
- The thread heat resistance test is revised to refer to ASTM D7138, Standard Test Method to Determine Melting Temperature of Synthetic Fibers, using either Method 1 or Method 2.
- Odor resistance is removed from the standard, including the odor resistance test.
