Developed with consideration of the Federal Specification KKK-A-1822 and NFPA 1901: Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus, NFPA 1917 defines the minimum requirements for the design, performance, and testing of new automotive ambulances intended for use under emergency conditions to provide medical treatment and transportation of sick or injured people to appropriate medical facilities. Please note: As part of the Emergency Response and Responder Safety Document Consolidation Plan (consolidation plan) as approved by the NFPA Standards Council, this Standard has been combined into new consolidated Standard NFPA 1900. As a result of this action, the “current edition” of NFPA 1917 shown on this page is the last published edition of the standard’s content as a stand-alone standard. About This Product

New technical content in the 2019 edition of NFPA 1917, Standard for Automotive Ambulances helps you provide safer ambulances for first responders and the public.

Including new crash tests and a host of other changes, the 2019 edition of NFPA 1917 is essential for manufacturers as well as any agency or organization that uses an ambulance to provide pre-hospital medical care. Modeled after the Federal Specification KKK-A-1822 and NFPA 1901, Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus, this critical standard defines the minimum requirements for the design, performance, and testing of new automotive ambulances intended for use under emergency conditions to provide medical treatment and transportation of sick or injured people to appropriate medical facilities.

Featuring stand-alone chapters and easy-to-read graphics, NFPA 1917 is your comprehensive source for requirements for the design, performance, and testing of new and remounted ambulances.

In addition to definitions based on current terminology, the standard presents general requirements for ambulance design and performance, including stand-alone chapters for ambulance components, chassis, patient compartments, low-voltage electrical systems and warning devices, and line voltage electrical systems — with specific provisions for test methods. NFPA 1917 streamlines technical information with easy-to-read charts and graphics, and references NFPA 70®, National Electrical Code® (NEC®), NFPA 1901, and NFPA 1906; ASTM, IPC, and SAE publications; ANSI/UL standards; and other government publications.

Changes in this edition reflect the demand for greater vehicle safety:

  • New crash tests from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
  • Revised text for third-party testing and certification and for self-certification by the final stage ambulance manufacturer (FSAM) help ensure quality standards are met.
  • Clarified language specifies where third-party testing and certification must occur and where self-certification can occur by the FSAM.
  • All-new Chapter 10 and Annex C provide requirements and additional advice to assist the AHJ in purchasing a remounted or refurbished ambulance — and address a lack of information to regulate or assist AHJs in these specific areas.

Update to the 2019 edition of NFPA 1917 for the most up-to-date information for manufacturers, testing organizations, and state EMS officials who adopt the standard in their jurisdiction. (Print, 64 pp., 2019)
